The journey

This thirteen-day Jomolhari (Chomolhari) trek framework is one of Bhutan’s classic high-altitude treks. After acclimatisation days in Paro, the trail follows the Paro Chhu up to Jangothang, the camp below Mount Jomolhari, then loops back over high passes to the Paro valley. The highest point is Bonte La at about 4,890 m. It is for experienced trekkers who are fit for long days at altitude.

How hard is the Jomolhari trek?

It is a challenging trek. Some days involve seven to eight hours of walking, several camps are above 4,000 m, and the loop crosses three high passes. Previous multi-day trekking experience is strongly recommended, and you should seek medical advice about altitude before booking.

Acclimatisation and rest

The itinerary includes two acclimatisation hikes before the trek, including the Tiger’s Nest, a rest day at Jangothang and a buffer day in Paro after the trail. Weather or trail conditions may still require the route or timings to change.

When can you trek to Jomolhari?

The usual seasons are April to May and October to early November. The high passes are generally not trekked in winter. Final dates depend on weather and local trekking advice.

Agree the mountain route before booking

The final trek briefing sets out the daily stages and distances, approved campsites, supplied equipment, meals, pack animals and contingency plans, including what happens if a trekker is affected by altitude.
