14-Day East to West Bhutan Tour
A fourteen-day overland journey across Bhutan, entering at Samdrup Jongkhar in the east and finishing in Paro after Trashigang, Bumthang, Phobjikha and Punakha.
Cultural
Go beyond the western circuit with an overland journey to Trongsa and Bumthang, allowing three nights in the central valleys.
This ten-day overland Bhutan journey travels from Paro through Thimphu, Punakha and Trongsa to Bumthang. Three nights in Bumthang give you two full days in the central valleys before returning west in stages.
Begin with Thimphu and Punakha, then spend a night in Trongsa on the way to Bumthang. Use your two full central-valley days for selected temples, cultural visits and valley walks, with time to follow the interests that brought you here.
The approach to Bumthang and the return west involve substantial travel on mountain roads. We plan meal and rest stops into the route and review road conditions close to travel. Add nights if you prefer a slower pace. This itinerary uses road transport; domestic flights are not included.
The ten-day route ends with a night in Paro followed by departure. It does not include a dedicated Tiger’s Nest day. Add one full day in Paro if the hike is a priority, rather than combining it with a long drive or your flight.
We tailor the hotels, meals, visits and walking pace to your group. Your written itinerary and quote identify the agreed services, government fees and applicable GST before you book. See our visa, SDF and tax guide for the current fee breakdown.
Send your dates, group size and interests to request your itinerary and quote.
Settle into Thimphu after the transfer from Paro. Keep the rest of the day light, with time for rest and orientation. Overnight in Thimphu.
Select a small number of cultural visits and time in town. Use the day to discuss the longer route ahead, including walking preferences and road breaks. Overnight in Thimphu.
Cross Dochula when road and weather conditions permit. Allow time for a Punakha visit without planning a demanding walk after the transfer. Overnight in Punakha.
Make this a travel day with planned meal and rest stops. An arrival visit is optional and depends on the road journey and local opening arrangements. Overnight in Trongsa.
Discuss a Trongsa cultural visit before continuing to Bumthang. Arrive with time to settle into the new base rather than filling the evening with more sights. Overnight in Bumthang.
Build the day around selected temples and places of cultural interest, with access and visiting etiquette explained locally. Keep the programme focused on your interests. Overnight in Bumthang.
Choose a valley walk, additional cultural visits or a slower day. Any host-led experience requires advance agreement and is confirmed in your itinerary. Overnight in Bumthang.
Allow the day for the westward road journey with breaks. Avoid treating this as a full sightseeing day as well. Overnight in Punakha.
Continue west toward Paro and choose any short arrival activity around the time available. Overnight in Paro.
This ten-day version ends with the airport transfer. If Tiger’s Nest is a priority, add a full Paro day before departure; it is not automatically included in the ten-day route.
No dedicated hiking day is included in this overland version. Add at least one full day in Paro if Tiger’s Nest is a priority, or discuss a shorter central Bhutan programme.
It has two full days in Bumthang, but the approach and return include long road transfers. Travellers wanting a slower overall pace should consider extra nights.
