Travel guide

Gelephu Mindfulness City, or GMC, is a Special Administrative Region in southern Bhutan, developing around a vision that combines economic opportunity, wellbeing and Bhutanese values. You can visit existing Gelephu and its religious sites and hot springs today. The wider GMC project is developing in phases, so its architectural renderings should not be treated as photographs of completed attractions. Official GMC website, development overview.

For travellers, the useful distinction is between the town you can explore now and the future city taking shape around it. This guide explains both, with practical suggestions for deciding whether Gelephu belongs in your Bhutan itinerary.

What is Gelephu Mindfulness City?

His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck announced the GMC vision on 17 December 2023, during Bhutan’s 116th National Day celebrations. The announcement outlined an economic hub supported by green energy, education and better connectivity, with personal wellbeing central to its development. Bhutan Tourism’s announcement.

GMC’s official website describes a region in Bhutan’s southern plains, bordering Assam in India. It states that GMC was established by Royal Charter in February 2024, with a distinct administrative framework within the Kingdom of Bhutan. Official GMC introduction.

Tourism is part of a broader vision that also includes spirituality, health and wellness, education, agriculture, energy and aviation. GMC is therefore more than a new holiday destination: it is a long-term development programme. GMC’s areas of focus.

What does “mindfulness” mean here?

GMC’s founding vision draws on Bhutanese spiritual heritage and Gross National Happiness, placing wellbeing alongside economic development. Bhutan Tourism’s introduction.

The architectural proposals translate those ideas into neighbourhoods shaped by waterways, connections between buildings and natural landscapes, and bridges combining transport with civic and cultural functions. These remain proposals whose individual delivery and visitor access depend on the development process. BIG’s GMC masterplan.

For a visitor, travelling mindfully can be simpler: spend time at fewer places, respect religious practices and leave room for conversations rather than rushing between stops.

What can travellers visit in Gelephu now?

The most useful starting points are existing places with a life beyond the GMC project.

Gelephu Tshachu: the hot springs

Sarpang’s administration lists Gelephu Tshachu in Serzhong among the district’s hot springs and identifies it as road connected. It is an established place to consider for a hot-spring visit, rather than a proposed GMC wellness facility. Sarpang’s official cultural inventory.

Exodus Himalaya Tours can arrange a visit to Gelephu Tshachu. Give this stop space in your day if bathing is your priority; avoid squeezing it between arrival and an onward connection.

The springs should not be presented as a medical treatment or a luxury spa package. Facilities, bathing arrangements and access form part of the practical planning checklist below.

Tharpaling Guru Lhakhang

Sarpang’s administration lists Tharpaling Guru Lhakhang in Gelephu Thromde. Dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, it serves the local religious community as a place of worship and pilgrimage. This is the Gelephu temple described here, rather than the similarly named Tharpaling monastery in Bumthang. Official temple profile.

Exodus can arrange a visit to Guru Lhakhang. Approach it as a living religious site: allow a quiet visit, dress respectfully and follow the guidance given on site. A temple visit does not automatically include a private ceremony, teaching or meeting with a lama.

Gelephu town

Leave some unstructured time to explore the town and stop for a meal. Sarpang’s administration describes Gelephu as a southern commercial centre with a diverse population and a warm, humid climate. It offers a different setting from Bhutan’s mountain valleys. Sarpang’s Gelephu overview.

Town time also helps keep the journey grounded in the place that exists today, alongside interest in its future.

How much time should you allow?

Two nights, giving you one full day between arrival and departure, are a useful starting point for a visit centred on the town, Guru Lhakhang and Tshachu. Suggested outline; final arrangements depend on your dates.

A simple outline could be:

Part of the stay Suggested focus
Arrival day Transfer, settle in and explore the town if your arrival leaves time.
Full day Guru Lhakhang and Gelephu Tshachu, with time for lunch and an unhurried pace.
Departure day Your onward journey, organised around the actual transport schedule.

The order of visits will be agreed around local access and your transport schedule.

One night may work for a brief stop on a wider route, but leaves less room if arrival is late. Longer stays make sense when you have additional confirmed activities or a particular interest in the region. The wider journey to and from Gelephu needs its own time allowance.

How could Gelephu fit into a Bhutan itinerary?

As an extension to a western Bhutan holiday

If Paro, Thimphu and Punakha are your main priorities, plan those first and assess Gelephu as a separate extension. A Paro–Gelephu flight can be an option when operating dates fit your journey.

For a short holiday, adding another destination may reduce time at the places you most want to see. Compare the trade-offs using our Bhutan itinerary guide.

As a southern stop within a longer journey

Gelephu can provide a southern focus for a route designed around your interests. The town, temple and hot springs give that stop a practical purpose independent of future GMC landmarks.

Ask for the complete route and overnight sequence before choosing your trip length. Your itinerary should allow enough time for the agreed transfers.

As an arrival or departure point

Gelephu’s flight connections may allow a different entry or exit arrangement. Whether this is useful depends on your travel dates, entry eligibility and the rest of your itinerary.

We will set out the agreed visits and services in your written quote.

How do you reach Gelephu?

By air

Drukair’s October 2026 timetable lists Paro–Gelephu flights and Gelephu–Kolkata sectors in both directions. It shows Gelephu services on selected days, rather than daily departures. All schedules are subject to change. Official October timetable.

For other travel dates, use the airline’s current schedule page.

Existing flight services are separate from the larger airport development associated with GMC. The official GMC news listing records an airfield construction contract announcement dated 3 October 2026. That announcement should not be confused with the opening of every proposed airport facility. GMC official news.

By road

Bhutan Tourism lists Gelephu among Bhutan’s road entry points from India. However, a listed crossing is not confirmation that every passport holder can use it for every journey. Official travel information.

For overland travel within Bhutan, plan transport and overnight stops as part of the complete itinerary. During the monsoon, flooding and landslides can affect transport and services. Bhutan Tourism FAQs.

Our Bhutan seasons guide can help you consider dates for the whole journey.

Visas, permits and the Sustainable Development Fee

Bhutan’s general visitor guidance distinguishes visas from permits. Most visitors require a visa before travel; Indian visitors require a permit, while Bangladesh and Maldives have separately described visa procedures. The general visa application fee is a one-off US$40, rather than a daily charge. Official visa guidance.

Bhutan Tourism currently publishes a standard adult SDF of US$100 per night, with a different rate for Indian nationals and concessions for children. Nationality-specific incentives may also apply. Official SDF guidance.

Gelephu is included in the conditional SDF waiver for visits of up to 24 hours within designated border-town zones. This is not a general exemption for a longer stay, visits outside those zones or a wider Bhutan itinerary. Official tourism FAQs.

Our visa and SDF guide provides further planning context.

Your Gelephu planning checklist

Before committing to the journey, settle these points together:

  • Entry and fees: Your nationality, permitted arrival point, documents, route and applicable SDF.
  • Transport: Flights or road transfers, overnight stops and a sensible connection buffer.
  • Visits: Current access to Tshachu and Guru Lhakhang, opening arrangements, charges and bathing facilities.
  • Accommodation: The property, room arrangement and meals included in your written quote.
  • Suitability: Walking requirements, bathing needs and seasonal conditions.
  • Special activities: Separate permission or booking for retreats, ceremonies, official briefings, events or development-site access.

This keeps the visit focused on named places and agreed arrangements.

Dated update — 1 November 2026: Project 108

On 1 November 2026, volunteers raised 108 Jangchub Chortens in a single day along the Mau Chhu in GMC. Read what happened and why 108 matters.

Visitor access to the chortens has not yet been announced; consult the organisers. Official Project 108 website.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gelephu town the same as GMC?

Gelephu is the existing town. GMC refers to the broader Special Administrative Region and development vision. Exploring the town does not mean every proposed GMC landmark is available.

What can Exodus arrange in Gelephu?

Exodus can arrange visits to Gelephu Tshachu and Guru Lhakhang. The programme and other services should be specified in your written itinerary and quote.

How many nights should I plan?

Two nights are a useful starting point for one full local visiting day. Add the time required to reach Gelephu and continue your journey. This is a suggested planning allowance, not a fixed package.

Can I fly directly to Gelephu?

Drukair’s October 2026 timetable includes Paro–Gelephu and Kolkata–Gelephu sectors. Availability depends on your dates. Drukair schedules.

Is GMC completed?

GMC’s development is phased. Its future architecture and facilities should be distinguished from existing places and confirmed visitor experiences. Official development overview.

Does a visit include meditation or a wellness retreat?

The city’s name does not establish a bookable retreat programme. A retreat requires a named venue and agreed activities. A temple visit and a hot-spring visit are distinct experiences.
